Drive Japan Beta: The Japan You Can’t Reach by Train

Drive Japan Beta is the sober-travel entry point for rural coastlines, mountain towns, small museums, workshops, remote food culture and landscapes that are difficult to reach by rail.
CAN I DRIVE IN JAPAN?
Your eligibility depends on the licence you hold, the issuing country or region, the correct international permit or official translation where applicable, and the period and conditions of use. Do not rely on a generic online answer for a booking. Confirm the latest requirements with the relevant Japanese authorities and rental operator before travel.
THE DRIVE JAPAN CHECKLIST
International driving eligibility; vehicle class; insurance and excess; ETC and toll roads; fuel type; EV charging; parking; accident procedure; emergency contacts; winter equipment; snow and ice; mountain roads; tunnels; narrow local streets; road signs; speed limits; seat belts; child restraints; railway crossings and local restrictions.
ETC AND TOLLS
Ask whether the rental includes an ETC card, how tolls are settled and whether any regional pass applies to the actual route. Do not assume every rental plan or lane accepts the same payment method.
FUEL AND EV CHARGING
Confirm the correct fuel before leaving the counter. Rural stations may close early. For EV travel, check connector compatibility, charging access, operating hours and a backup charger; map coverage alone is not a guarantee that a charger is available.
PARKING
Use marked legal parking. Do not block narrow streets, private homes, working ports, farm access, emergency routes or snow-clearing areas. Hotel or attraction parking does not automatically allow overnight vehicle stays.
INSURANCE AND ACCIDENTS
Understand what is covered, the deductible, non-operation charges, roadside assistance and who must be contacted after any incident. Stop safely, assist anyone injured, call police and the rental company, and follow the insurer’s procedure. Do not privately settle and leave without required reporting.
SNOW AND MOUNTAIN ROADS
Winter tires do not remove winter risk. Weather, closures, black ice, visibility, avalanche or landslide risk and daylight hours can change quickly. Choose a safer route or cancel when conditions exceed your experience.
CAR-ONLY JAPAN
Future routes will prioritize destinations where a car creates genuine access: rural craft regions, disappearing townscapes, coastal food routes, remote hot springs, mountain settlements and small local operators. Each route should include distance, realistic drive time, rest stops, fuel or charging, parking, signal gaps, weather risk and a sober return plan.
ZERO MIXING WITH NIGHT DRINKING
Drive Japan never recommends driving for an alcohol-centered Night Japan experience. Park before drinking, use a taxi or public transport, designate a sober driver or stay overnight. The next drive begins only when the driver is sober and legally fit.
LOCAL RENTAL PARTNERS
JPNentry plans to work with regional rental operators that can explain vehicle condition, insurance, winter equipment, pickup rules and local route constraints clearly to international visitors. Partner onboarding remains Waitlist-only until responsibilities and terms are reviewed.
